Helping Build Better Humans

Each year, the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) sponsors National School Counseling Week. The theme this year is "School Counselors: Helping Build Better Humans”. Celebrated during the first week in February, the goal is to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors in schools, highlighting the impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve success.

School counselors are actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents; are working in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today’s world; are focusing on positive ways to enhance students’ academic, postsecondary and social/emotional development; and are working with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves.
School counselors at LuHi have the unique ability to get to know students on a deeper level. With the small sizes of caseloads, we are able to work with students on an individual basis. This certainly ties into the theme of “Helping Build Better Humans”. While discussing the idea of what makes a “better human” as a department, we came up with quite a few adjectives. In fact, it led to the creation of a bulletin board in the student commons outside the cafeteria. We believe we all can Help Build Better Humans by encouraging characteristics like:

B - Bravery
E - Empathy
T - Tolerance
T - Trust
E - Education
R - Respect

H - Honesty
U - Unbiasedness
M - Modesty
A - Altruistism
N - Nurturing
S - Sympathy

We hope to foster broader thinking in LuHi students this week as we challenge them to help those around them (and themselves) to be better humans. Are you up for the challenge too? How can you help build better humans?
