1. How is the wrestling team doing so far this year?
So far, we had one match, but have many upcoming matches during the month of January. We also had two tournaments, which the whole team did not go to, but some of the wrestlers had their first ever win. Josue Cruz and Luke Shank both won at the Germantown Tournament and Ben Cahn won his first tournament last weekend at the Monsignor Farrell Tournament. Senior Mark Imbert has been on the team the longest, and Daniel Mallory and Frank Moriarty are also veterans. Other high school wrestlers include Josue Cruz, Ben Cahn, Gavin LeMieux and Luke Shank, and we have two middle school wrestlers in Brandon Sherman and Andrew Scott.
2. This weekend is the Sorenson Memorial Tournament here at LuHi. What can we expect to see during the tournament?
It is important to run a good tournament and be competitive. In the past we have had first place finishers, which is always fun for the team and the school. There are currently nine teams coming, so there will be a lot of action to see. We will also run a JV tournament at the same time, so all four mats will be used.
3. What is a typical wrestling practice like?
Practice consists of learning and drilling moves to get the muscle memory to remember what to do in situations. It also usually running in the halls to get a good cardio workout. In addition, we do live and situational wrestling so the wrestlers learn what to do in different circumstances. We usually end with pushups and situps.
4. What is the team looking forward to for the rest of the season?
The team is looking forward to a couple more matches and some tournaments. There are two big tournaments that end our season. The first is the NYSAIS state tournament, which is on Saturday February 8 at Hackley. The second is National Preps, which is held at Lehigh University from February 20 - February 22.
