New Faces at LuHi

We are so excited to be able to share with our community some new additions to our LuHi family. Our first new faculty member will be joining us on our middle school team as the 7th and 8th grade social studies teacher. Ms. Alyssa Knipfing is eagerly awaiting the start of the new school year to share her experience and enthusiasm for middle school, her passion for service, and love of education.

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Merrick, attended Sanford H. Calhoun High School, and currently live in my hometown!

Where did you attend college? Graduate school? What were your majors/ programs of study in each?
I earned my Master of Arts degree in Secondary Social Studies Education from Hofstra University where I also served as a Teaching assistant in the School of Education. I studied Middle School Social Studies and Elementary Teacher Education with a minor in History at the University of Delaware. Also, I lived in Athens, Greece, in January 2016 where I completed a philosophy study abroad program in the ancient birthplace of philosophy.

Where have you taught before LuHi?
I was a Social Studies leave replacement teacher at Oceanside High School for the 2018-2019 school year. I was a permanent substitute teacher at Grand Avenue Middle School in Bellmore for the 2017-2018 school year. In Delaware, I completed a total of 27 weeks of student teaching: 3 weeks teaching 5th grade, 12 weeks teaching 3rd grade, and 12 weeks teaching 6th grade Middle School Social Studies.

What do you love about Social Studies?
I love teaching social studies because it is comprised of many different disciplines. Social studies includes not only history but also geography, sociology, government, and civics to name a few.

What do you love about Middle School?
Middle School is an exciting environment since students are eager to learn, especially experimenting with new and diverse interests.

What are you most looking forward to as you step into the role of teacher at LuHi?
I am super excited to join the LuHi family because it is a warm and close-knit community. I’m looking forward to learning from veteran teachers, sharing ideas, and also learning from my students too!

What do you hope your students learn through your class?
I hope my students learn the importance of being respectful and caring not only in the classroom environment, but also the community.

What are your interests outside of teaching?
I enjoy cooking, knitting, and watching movies. I love taking my dog, Dutch, to the dog park.

What is a little known fact about you?
I am a huge fan of all things Disney! I’ve been to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, many times and have many great family memories made there.

What is your favorite book? Why?
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This is my favorite book because of the setting’s historical time period of the 1920s. The 1920s, also known as the Roaring 20s, was a time of great cultural and social change in American society.

What is your favorite holiday and why?
Without a doubt, Christmas is my absolute favorite holiday. The whole month of December is a holy and special time to celebrate the birth of Jesus. My family and I have special holiday traditions we do together each year to celebrate during Christmastime.

We like to refer to our caring school community as our "LuHi family". What is one characteristic or memory of your own family that you would like to share?
Each year my family and I attend the Hallmark ornament premiere events in order to add to our collection of Hallmark Christmas ornaments. Christmas starts in July for my family since July is the first ornament premiere event of the year. We have about 3,000 ornaments to date from when my parents first started to collect them in 1986.

Please help us welcome Ms. Knipfing to our LuHi family in September! Keep an eye out for our future blog posts highlighting more new faces on campus.
