Outstanding members of the Lutheran community were honored by Long Island Lutheran with the Rev. Ed Visscher Award, Paul Homer and Jonathan Schenck (‘68).
This award celebrates individuals whose support and involvement enrich the lives of young people.
Paul Homer grew up in North Attleboro, Massachusetts and met his wife Jana in high school. He received a B.S. in Finance, magna cum laude, from Bentley College and received an M.B.A., with distinction, from the Zarb School of Business at Hofstra University. In 1999, Paul joined Northwood Ventures, a leading private equity firm, where he currently serves as Managing Director. In addition to reviewing new investment opportunities, Paul currently serves on the board of several of Northwood’s portfolio companies including Air Waves, JVC Broadcasting, gifnote, Community Broadcasters, and Rudy’s Barbershops. Prior to joining Northwood, Paul served as a financial analyst for LearningSmith, a venture capital-financed educational products retailer with over 80 stores. While there, he evaluated various capital-raising alternatives for the rapidly growing firm and developed a financial reporting system.
Homer is on the LuHi Board of Directors where he also serves as Treasurer and as a member of the Memorial Endowment Board. Additionally, he serves as an Advisory Board Member for the Center for Entrepreneurship at Hofstra University and Stone-Goff Partners, a middle-market private equity fund. Paul is active in his church, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in East Northport, where he was previously a member of the Executive Committee of the Council. For several years, Paul was a Director of the Long Island Capital Alliance and on the Board of Directors at Long Island Lutheran Day School at St. Paul’s.
Paul and Jana live on Long Island with their two sons, Brady (LuHi Class of 2024) and Pierce. He enjoys spending time with his family, golfing, and traveling.
Jonathan Schenck grew up in Sea Cliff and attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Glen Cove. He married Rosemarie Borriello in 1979 and moved to Pompton Plains, New Jersey where they still reside.
Schenck came to LuHi in the fall of 1962 for seventh grade and began his football career. He worked his way up to become a starter on the Varsity Team in his junior and senior years, winning the “Most Improved Player.” He continued playing football during his years at Valparaiso University. After college, he worked at his father’s State Farm Insurance Agency in Sea Cliff. In 1974 he earned his license and opened his own State Farm Agency in Bayside.
Jon has always been active in his community, coaching Little League baseball, church basketball, rec basketball, AAU basketball, football, and soccer. He has also been involved in scouting, teaching confirmation classes, and serving as Lector in his church, St. Mary’s in Pompton Plains. He was a member of the founding Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Club of Morris County and was recently honored with the 2018 Boys and Girls Club of North Jersey’s “Man and Youth Award.” In 2001 he joined the local Pequannock Township Fire Department and instituted the Pequannock Township Junior Fire Department in 2008. Jon served as Department Chief Instructor until 2015 and is still an active Department member.
Jon and Roe have three children, Heather Ambrosi, Erik, and Brittany. They also have two grandchildren, Darren (7) and Harrison (2 1/2). In his free time, Jon plays golf, enjoys his new boat, loves teaching his two grandsons how to fish, and travels with his wife. Jon also collects historic firearms.
