LuHi Meal Packing 2019 is complete, and so many in the LuHi Family deserve our thanks for the collective efforts. Starting back in November, many of our parents and friends, including event sponsors Bryan and Karen Hallock, supported this event through donations at the LuHi Auction totaling $32,350. Students raised funding through Simply Soup, Polar Bear Run, and t-shirts sales. Outside groups were also contacted to join us for the event. In the end, over $60,000 was raised to make LuHi Meal Packing a success.
A team of LuHi staff, students, and friends organized the event from start to finish and LuHi relied on the overall management from our friends from the Minnesota-based Meals from the Heart. Thanks to our new Meal Packing Coordinator, alumnus Emma (Schwenkel) Lanzone '06.
After all of the planning and fundraising, packing began on Sunday, April 7. Students converged on the Visscher Gym with classmates Monday and Tuesday, understanding their task and working with a collective willing spirit and warm heart.
In the end, over 1,100 volunteers, including our entire student body, faculty, and staff, packed 273,474 meals to be delivered to Island Harvest and local pantries. These meals will help our neighbors on Long Island struggling with food insecurity. An extra special shout out goes to the Class of 2019 who packed a record number of meals during their two-set session. They packed 47,736 meals at the end of the day Tuesday, getting us on track to finish as close to our goal as possible.
It is our hope and prayer that these meals be a blessing to each family who receives them. As our box sticker says, these meals were "Packed with love at LuHi."
We are happy to say that we have packed 2,781,986 meals since the first event in 2011. We look forward to our 10th Anniversary event in 2020 and hope you will all consider how you can be involved.
