LuHi Students Embark on a Life-Changing Mission Trip to Guatemala

During February break, 27 dedicated LuHi juniors and seniors volunteered their time and talents to embark on a mission trip to Guatemala. Led by the Reverend Dr. Adam Schoepflin and esteemed members of our faculty and staff, these students traveled to Ciudad Vieja, a community located approximately 20 minutes from Antigua, to serve those in need.

The team partnered with the Kairos School, an organization deeply committed to supporting local families by providing educational resources and assistance. This collaboration allowed our students to witness firsthand the impact of service, fostering a deeper understanding of global communities and the importance of compassion.

One of the most profound aspects of the trip was the construction of a home for a family of four—parents and their two young daughters—who had been facing medical struggles and were in need of a safe and secure living space. The family’s warmth and hospitality left a lasting impression on our students, who were honored to take on the responsibility of building their home.

Throughout the week, our students immersed themselves in the physical labor required for the construction. The father of the family played an integral role, teaching them how to mix and work with cement by hand. Despite the challenges, his uplifting personality inspired and motivated the group. Our students embraced the opportunity to practice their Spanish, forming meaningful connections with him and his family through both words and shared experiences.

One particularly special moment occurred when the mother and daughters joined in painting the wall panels of their new home. This collaborative effort highlighted the power of teamwork, demonstrating that service is not just about giving but also about working alongside others to create something meaningful. The experience reinforced the value of community, resilience, and the impact of even the smallest acts of kindness.

Beyond the physical work, this trip was an eye-opening journey of faith, service, and personal growth. Students returned home with a renewed perspective on gratitude, humility, and the importance of using their gifts to serve others. The bonds formed between students, faculty, and the community of Ciudad Vieja will remain in their hearts for years to come.

LuHi is incredibly proud of our students for stepping beyond their comfort zones and embracing this opportunity to make a difference. The Guatemala Mission Trip was not just about building a home—it was about building relationships, fostering empathy, and strengthening our commitment to serving others. We look forward to next year’s Mission Trip!
