Spotlight: Ashton Kay ’25 – Athletics Intern and Varsity Golfer

Ashton Kay, a member of the Class of 2025, has taken a unique approach to his high school athletic experience—balancing his role as a student-athlete on the Varsity Golf team with an internship in the LuHi Athletics Department. His dual involvement has offered him a rare, behind-the-scenes perspective on what it takes to keep an elite high school athletic program running smoothly.

“Working within LuHi Athletics has been an incredible learning experience,” Ashton shared. “It’s helped me build relationships with coaches and teammates beyond the classroom and given me a deeper appreciation for the community behind the program.”

As an intern, Ashton has seen firsthand the amount of effort and coordination required to execute games, practices, and events. From logistics to promotion, he’s learned that success on the field starts well before the first whistle. “It’s not just about showing up and playing—everything from communication to social media plays a huge role in how a program functions and is perceived.”

While golf has always been a personal passion, Ashton saw joining the LuHi team as a chance to represent his school doing what he loves. That decision has paid off—not only in personal milestones, like breaking school records but also in the camaraderie he’s built with teammates. “Golf may be an individual sport, but the sense of team has been powerful. Supporting each other through wins and losses has made this journey incredibly meaningful.”

Balancing academics, athletics, and an internship isn’t easy, but Ashton has found his stride through structure and time management. “Having a routine is key. I make sure to prioritize and stay organized, so nothing falls through the cracks.”

Reflecting on his experience, Ashton sees how his role in the athletics department has enhanced his perspective as both an athlete and a future leader. “It’s given me real-world experience in sports management and taught me how much happens behind the scenes to support athletes like myself. I’ve grown in ways I never expected.”

His advice to others? “Get involved. It’s an amazing way to build relationships, gain hands-on experience, and explore what you’re passionate about—especially if you’re interested in sports or leadership.”

Ashton’s journey is a powerful example of how stepping beyond the playing field can offer lessons that extend far beyond high school. His dedication, insight, and enthusiasm make him a standout both on and off the course.
