A Blessed Beginning: LuHi’s Semester 1 Recap and Back-to-School Highlights

As the school year began, the LuHi community came together for meaningful and exciting events to kick off the year. From spiritual reflections and student projects to spirited celebrations and academic achievements, here’s a snapshot of our recent happenings:
New Year, New Space
We began with the dedication of our newly renovated classrooms and a meditation on this year’s theme: We are LuHi. We Are Blessed. Students and families gathered for opening worship, explored the beautiful new spaces, and left blessing cards on class bulletin boards. New students connected with their peers and mentors during Orientation, creating a welcoming start to the year.
Spirit Week & Pep Rally
Spirit Week brought creative dress-up days like “BBQ Dad and Soccer Mom Day” and “Anything but a Backpack Day,” culminating in a Pep Rally featuring our Drum Corps, banner decorating, and air mattress relay races! Students cheered on our athletes throughout the week, wrapping up with Saturday’s football game.
Creative Classroom Moments
- STEM Projects: Seventh graders handcrafted wooden crosses for each classroom, blending woodworking skills with a meaningful mission.
- Ceramics Class: A visit from professional potter Mr. Sullivan gave students hands-on experience and expert coaching.
- Engineering Essentials: Students designed and tested cell phone towers, showcasing teamwork and problem-solving skills.
- Spanish V Culture Day: Guest speakers, including family members of Mr. Hernandez, shared Hispanic culture through dance, food, and conversation.
- AP Environmental Science: Students explored local ecosystems aboard a 19th-century sailing sloop, collecting water samples and marine life.
Performing Arts Achievements
Each year, talented students in LuHi’s Music Performing Arts programs are chosen to participate in the annual All County Music Festival, where top musicians from schools across Nassau County come together to learn and perform in a culminating concert. This year, we are thrilled to celebrate Julissa ’25, Nayelie ’28, Christian ’30, Emily ’25, London ’31, Francko ’28, Stone ’25, Nicholas ’31, and Yimeng ’25 for representing LuHi at the festival. Additionally, Yimeng ’25 and Emily ’25 achieved the incredible honor of being selected for the All State Festival—an outstanding accomplishment!

Giving Back
LuHi students demonstrated their heart for service through the annual Thanksgiving Basket Drive, which provided meals for over 150 families, and a coat drive supporting the Interfaith Nutrition Network.
Retreats and Traditions
LuHi’s retreat program offered opportunities for reflection, connection, and growth. Students from grades 6-10 participated in meaningful retreats at Camp Olmsted, Frost Valley, and local outdoor centers. Seniors kicked off a new tradition with the first-ever Friendsgiving potluck, fostering fellowship and gratitude.
Academic Excellence
LuHi’s AP program continues to excel, earning the prestigious Gold with Access Tier award in the 2024 AP School Honor Roll for providing equitable access to advanced coursework.
Looking Ahead
As the year unfolds, we’re excited to continue building on the successes of these opening weeks. Stay tuned for more updates and celebrations as we journey together through another blessed year at LuHi!
