Honoring Service and Sacrifice: A Veteran’s Day Tribute from LuHi
Each year on November 11, we come together to observe Veteran’s Day—a day dedicated to honoring the bravery, dedication, and sacrifices of those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Originally observed as Armistice Day in 1919 to mark the end of World War I, this day was later expanded to recognize all veterans who have committed themselves to protecting our freedoms. It offers an opportunity for our nation to express gratitude to veterans past and present, acknowledging their selflessness and unwavering dedication. At LuHi, we proudly carry forward this spirit, honoring those within our own community who have answered the call to serve.
Among these veterans, we especially remember Private First-Class Allen Paul Sheehan, a beloved member of the Class of 1965. His life and service exemplify the highest ideals of sacrifice and dedication. Born on April 14, 1947, in Muttontown, New York, PFC Sheehan enlisted in the Marine Corps following his graduation from LuHi. He began his tour on December 14, 1967, serving as a Rifleman in the 1st Marine Division, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, D Company. Tragically, PFC Sheehan was killed in action on March 17, 1968, during Operation Worth in Quang Nam province, South Vietnam.
Throughout his service, PFC Sheehan earned multiple commendations for his valor, including the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Marine Corps Presidential Unit Citation. His legacy within our community is a reminder of courage, honor, and commitment to both his country and his faith. PFC Sheehan’s life and dedication inspire us at LuHi to live with respect, resilience, and a commitment to something greater than ourselves.
This Veteran’s Day, we also recognize and celebrate all LuHi alumni who have served in the military. Their commitment to duty, often involving profound personal sacrifice, resonates deeply within our community. Each veteran’s legacy of service motivates our students to reflect on the importance of character, responsibility, and the impact of a life devoted to service.
On October 19, 2024, a memorial plaque was dedicated to PFC Allen Paul Sheehan and all LuHi alumni who have served—a heartfelt gift from the First Family Classes of 1964, 1965, and 1966. This tribute, a symbol of community and faith, honors the values that have been central to LuHi since its founding. As we honor PFC Sheehan and all LuHi veterans this Veteran’s Day, may we also commit to upholding the values they exemplified, striving for unity, respect, and peace in their honor.
