LuHi Boys Lacrosse Captures State Title in Overtime Thriller
LuHi’s Boys Varsity Lacrosse team won the first NYSAIS state championship in program history on Wednesday, May 25! They defeated the Hackley School 9-8 in overtime.
The game was a thriller. LuHi established an early 2-0 lead, however Hackley got right back into the game and the score was tied 3-3 at the half.
The second half saw Hackley establish a 7-3 lead, but the Crusaders mounted a tremendous comeback to tie the game at 8 as time expired in the 4th quarter.
During the sudden death overtime period, Jack Montagano ’24 secured the opening draw to start overtime and headed toward the sideline as a pair Hackley defenders closed in, but a timeout by Coach O’Reilly ensured the Crusader possession. Following the timeout, LuHi set up their offense which led to Ryan Krudis ’24 passing to Sam Stewart ’24. Sam Stewart RIPPED a shot on goal that scored the game winner!
Coach Mike O’Reilly described the victory as “A true team effort with eight different players scoring on offense. It was also a great defensive effort with Rocco Sergio as the cornerstone along with William O’Toole, William Santella, Robert Barrera, John Viggiani and Ethan Bramoff all playing good defense which allowed our offense to finally click and play that explosive style we played all season.”
Great game and a great season for our champions!
