Exploring the World of Science at LuHi: Empowering Students for Success

LuHi Science Students

At Long Island Lutheran Middle and High School (LuHi), our Science Department is committed to providing students with a transformative educational experience that goes beyond textbook learning. We aim to instill a passion for scientific inquiry and equip our graduates with the knowledge, skills, and experiences they need to thrive in the ever-evolving world of science.

Strengths of the Department: Our Science Department boasts a team of caring and experienced teachers who bring a hands-on approach to science education. Recognizing that science can sometimes be perceived as abstract and theoretical, our teachers make learning engaging and accessible, allowing students to apply their knowledge in practical and meaningful ways. Additionally, the upcoming modernization of our laboratory facilities through LuHi’s Campus Renovation project will provide students with a cutting-edge learning space. For motivated students, we also offer a Science Research experience as a co-curricular component, allowing them to delve deeper into their scientific interests.

Our goal is for LuHi graduates to walk away from our Science Department equipped with a solid foundation in major scientific disciplines, including Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. We want them to be able to demonstrate an understanding of key concepts, theoretical principles, and experimental findings in these fields. Furthermore, our graduates gain invaluable experience working in diverse teams within classroom and laboratory settings, fostering essential collaboration and communication skills. They leave our department with a deep understanding of how science applies to the world around them, as well as recognizing how scientific methods and principles can address and solve real-world problems.

Middle School Experience: In our middle school, we provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the world of science. They begin their journey with Life Science, exploring the wonders of the natural world. This is followed by Physical Science, which delves into the fundamental principles that govern our physical universe. By the time students reach 8th grade, they study high school-level Earth Science, connecting with their environment and deepening their understanding of the Earth’s processes.

High School Experience: In high school, our students follow a traditional science progression, starting with Biology, moving on to Chemistry, and culminating with Physics. These core courses provide students with a solid foundation in the fundamental principles and concepts of each scientific discipline. For those seeking advanced scientific understanding, we offer AP-level classes in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Science. Exceptionally motivated students also have the opportunity to replace the standard track of classes with their corresponding AP counterparts, challenging themselves to reach new heights of scientific inquiry.

Highlighted Classes: One of our standout science electives is Anatomy and Physiology, which offers students a focused exploration of the intricate workings of the human body. This course goes beyond the scope of a traditional biology class, providing students with a deeper understanding of human anatomy and the interplay of physiological processes.

Another unique science elective we offer is Forensics. This course dispels the Hollywood crime/forensic movie tropes and immerses students in the scientific understanding of a crime scene. Through hands-on experiments and real-world case studies, students develop critical thinking skills and gain a comprehensive understanding of the scientific methods used in forensic investigations.

At LuHi, our Science Department is dedicated to empowering students to become curious and confident individuals with a deep appreciation for the world of science. We strive to cultivate a love for scientific inquiry and equip our graduates with the skills and knowledge needed for success in higher education and beyond.
