LuHi’s English Department: A Pathway to Effective Communication and Critical Thinking

LuHi Science Students

A strong English department is essential in shaping students’ ability to communicate effectively, think critically, and appreciate the power of literature. At LuHi, the English department excels in nurturing these skills and providing a transformative educational experience for students in several ways:

  1. Building Clear and Effective Writing Skills: One of the primary strengths of LuHi’s English department is its commitment to preparing students to write clearly and effectively. Through rigorous expectations, students are challenged to hone their writing skills, enabling them to excel in college and beyond. Whether students meet these expectations or face struggles, the department offers valuable feedback and guidance, helping students understand their strengths and areas for improvement.
  2. Fostering Responsible Consumers of Information: In today’s information-driven world, being a responsible consumer of information is crucial. LuHi’s English department recognizes this and strives to instill in students the ability to critically evaluate and navigate various sources of information. Students learn to discern biases, consider different perspectives, and approach information with an open mind, thereby developing the skills necessary to make informed decisions.
  3. Cultivating Effective Communication and Respectful Consideration: Communication skills are paramount in all aspects of life. The English department at LuHi aims to equip students with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively. Additionally, students are encouraged to respectfully consider perspectives that differ from their own, fostering empathy and understanding. These skills enable students to engage in meaningful discussions, negotiate meaning, and broaden their own perspectives.
  4. Middle School Experience: LuHi’s middle school English program offers immersive experiences that engage students in the world of language and literature. A standout example is the mock trial conducted in Mrs. Nicholson’s 7th grade class. Through this activity, students learn to present evidence to support claims, understanding the importance of contextualizing and interpreting evidence to connect with their audience. The inclusion of parents as observers and occasional participants creates a sense of community engagement. Additionally, students from other classes are invited to serve as jury members, fostering collaboration and providing a broader perspective. Through this interactive exercise, students develop critical thinking, public speaking, and persuasive writing skills, all while engaging in a vibrant community gathering. This experience provides a glimpse into the expectations of evidence-based writing, benefitting both emerging and proficient students.
  5. High School Experience: In the high school English program, students are exposed to the complexities and challenges of the adult world through literature. Through thought-provoking class discussions, students explore how literature reflects reality and gain a deeper understanding by encountering diverse perspectives. Furthermore, students learn to appreciate literature as an art form, recognizing the innovative use of language and techniques to augment, decorate, and celebrate the human experience.

LuHi’s English department is dedicated to nurturing students’ writing abilities, fostering critical thinking, and instilling a love for literature. By equipping students with the skills to be responsible consumers of information, promoting effective communication, and offering immersive experiences, LuHi prepares graduates to navigate the challenges of the future. Through the department’s commitment to excellence, LuHi students leave with essential skills, experiences, and knowledge that serve them well in their academic pursuits and beyond.
