Serving our Neighbors in 2020

As we begin a new semester, it feels as though the 19-20 school year is flying by! There is still so much to look forward to during the spring semester, including many opportunities to bless and serve our neighbors – both local and abroad. As we keep our theme of “Light” in mind (John 8:12), we work to provide multiple chances for our students to spread the light of Jesus to those around us. Read on as we highlight the many services opportunities here at LuHi in 2020!

“Be the Light” Days

Each month, Vicar Schoepflin brings groups of students on our “Be The Light Day” service trips. Students volunteer to spend the entire day serving the local community at various locations throughout Long Island. Today, a group of students is heading to Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore in Ronkonkoma to volunteer at their warehouse. Next week, another “Be the Light Day” trip is going to Island Harvest to volunteer at their food pantry.

Puerto Rico Mission Trip

LuHi’s annual Mission Trip has been a highlight of the LuHi experience for many, many years. Past trips have been to Chuburna Puerta in Mexico and Leon, Nicaragua. Last year, LuHi sent a group to Puerto Rico for the first time, and this year they are returning to Puerto Rico to serve the local community. The team of 33 students and 8 chaperones will help with hurricane and earthquake relief. The trip departs on February 12th, and returns on February 19th.

Meal Packing

Our 10th annual Meal Packing event will take place on March 15-17, 2020. This is a highlight of our school year, as our gymnasium is transformed into a Meal Packing “factory” where meals are assembled, packaged, and boxed by members of the LuHi community – including all LuHi students, faculty, and staff. Over the past 9 years of Meal Packing, we have packed 2,781,986 meals. The goal for 2020: go over the 3,000,000 meals packed mark! These meals are distributed to local food pantries and organizations, such as Island Harvest.

Habitat for Humanity Build Days

LuHi students will have the opportunity to participate in two Habitat for Humanity build days in Spring 2020. The first build date is Friday, April 3rd, and the second is Tuesday, June 2nd. Students must be 16 years old or older to participate in a Habitat build. On the build days, the students will work on a Habitat house already in progress, and help out with whatever is needed that day. On past build days, students have installed windows and siding, painted, landscaped, dug holes for fenceposts, and more!

More Service Opportunities

Additional service opportunities for students will be shared throughout the semester. Vicar Schoepflin shared that a few opportunities include building skateboards for children in foster care, and participating in the “Peanut Butter and Jelly gang”, a group that makes sandwiches for people in need. Students should listen to the service announcements in chapel for details on how to sign up and get involved! In addition, students can reach out to Vicar Schoepflin to find out what service opportunities are coming up.
